ASA J. McDANIELS

NORTH HORNELL-Asa J. McDaniels, 77, passed away early Saturday morning (Nov. 1, 2008) at his home at 403 Gifford Ave.
Born in Hornell on Jan. 25, 1931, he was a son of the late Lynn and Flossie Saxton McDaniels. On Oct. 24, 1953 he was married in Hornell to the former Violet Bradford, who survives.
A life long resident of Hornell, Asa was a graduate of Hornell High School.
He served with the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War from 1949 to his honorable discharge in 1953 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Before his retirement he was employed for 20 years as a driver for the former Murphy’s Trucking Co. in Hornell.
Asa was an avid Buffalo Bills and New York Mets fan and will be remembered for his favorite pastimes of talking and chewing gum.
His family includes his wife of 55 years, Violet; his two daughters, Sharon (Steve) Gillespie of North Hornell and Karen (Anthony) Sprinkle of Hornell; his son, Patrick (Brenda) McDaniels of North Hornell; his eight grandchildren and his six great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Kathleen (Clayton) McDaniels of Caton and Flossie (Larry) Wagner of Hornell; also his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Joseph in 1956 and his four brothers, Milo, William, Irving and Lynn McDaniels.
Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. today at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Gary Miles officiating, assisted by Asa’s brother-in-law, Herman Bradford. Committal services, with military honors will be held at the Bath National Cemetery.
