Arlene M. Clark

HORNELL-Arlene M. Clark, 95, passed away peacefully, early Saturday morning (Oct. 31, 2020) at her home on East Washington Street.

Born in Hornell on Aug. 22, 1925 she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Hallett) Recktenwald. On Feb. 18, 1948 she was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to Leo L. Clark, who predeceased her on Sept. 8, 2008 after 60 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by one son, John Clark; two grandsons Matt Stephens and Curtis Jack; one granddaughter, Tanya Clark; four sisters, Geraldine Dempsey, Laura Spooner, Ann Bullock and Marilyn Stuart and two brothers, Joseph Recktenwald and Alan Recktenwald.

A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Arlene was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School. She was employed at the former Tuttle & Rockwell Department Store in Hornell and the Hornell City School District before she retired.

Arlene was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. Throughout the years she has also been a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Arkport Historical Society and was a member of a sewing group.

She was an avid card player and also enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and will be remembered for being a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.

Her loving family includes three daughters, Linda (Jack) Markham of Hornell, Jean (Jerry) Schreiner of Hornell and Patricia (Mike) Clark of Canisteo; two sons, William (Yvonne) Clark of Wayland and James (Cammy) Clark of Fennville, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Muhleisen of Hornell and Bonnie (James) Brunswick of Wayland; three brothers, Robert “Bob” (Linda) Recktenwald of Hornell , John “Jack” (Bonnie) Recktenwald of Montana and Gerald “Jerry” (Sonia) Recktenwald of Hornell; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 5, 2020). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Town of Fremont. THOSE ATTENDING WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR FACE MASKS AND PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING.
