HORNELL – Arlene E. Tobin, 92, of Sawyer Street, passed away late Tuesday evening (Oct. 31, 2023) at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, after a recent illness.
Born in Susquehanna, PA on Dec. 13, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Marie (Moran) Westfall. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by one sister, Mary Louise Fogarty; and five brothers, Raymond, Allen, Kenneth, Jack and Thomas Westfall.
A graduate of Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, Arlene was also a graduate of St. Joseph’ s Hospital School of Nursing in Elmira, NY where she received her Registered Nurse (RN) certification.
She was a former resident of Binghamton, NY and has resided in Hornell since 1958. After raising her children, she began her 24-year career as a RN at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell in 1970, retiring in 1994.
Arlene was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where she was a member of the Resurrection Choir.
An avid golfer and Buffalo Bills fan, she also enjoyed traveling, especially to Myrtle Beach, SC to spend the winter months. Most of all she loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is lovingly survived by her husband of 67 years, James E. Tobin, who she married at St. John’s Church in Susquehanna on Oct. 13, 1956; five children, Robert (Matilda) Tobin of Long Island, NY, Mary Beth (Charles) Purce of Binghamton, NY, Michael (Megan) Tobin of Boston, MA, James (Julie) Tobin of Hornell and Ann (Marty) O’Connor of Monroe, NY; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 3-6 p.m. Monday (Nov. 6, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2023). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
