TOWN OF URBANA | Alexander M. Arnold, 94, of 19 North Maple Avenue, Avoca, NY died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Arnold was born on September 24, 1913 in Avoca, NY the son of Clarence B. Arnold and Florence Brown Arnold. He was a graduate of the Avoca Central School and the Rochester Business Institute. He was an Eagle Scout. He married Lilah M. Smalt on February 19, 1936. Lilah predeceased “Bud”, as he was known, on February 18, 2007 after 71 years of marriage. He is survived by their two children, Virginia Kay (Dana) Horne and Barbara Lynne (Donald) Smith, Virginia’s children G. Jeffrey Smith and Kristin Smith-Jenkins, and Barbara Lynne’s daughter Susan Wise, and seven great grandchildren.
Bud Arnold was a licensed insurance broker and the owner of the Arnold Insurance Agency in Avoca. Well known for his integrity and reliability, he retired in 1981 after 46 years of service to his clientele.
Bud was a great asset to his community as shown by his active participation throughout his life. He served in Avoca Town and Village government as Town Clerk for 34 years and Village Clerk for 22 years. In the early days he was Welfare Officer for the Town of Avoca for 14 years. He was a Director of the Bank of Avoca for 38 years, a past Master of the Avoca F.& A.M., Treasurer of the Avoca Hose Company for 21 years, past President of the Avoca-Wallace Lions Club, a 30 year Secretary-Treasurer of The Avoca Rod & Gun Club, Secretary for 12 years to the Avoca, Bath & Cohocton Bowling League, and a Trustee of the Avoca Presbyterian Church for many years. He remained a supporter of community sports, was active in hunting and fishing, and managed a team in Little League Baseball for several years. In retirement, Bud played golf regularly and was very active until a recent fall and brief illness before his death.
The name Alexander M. Arnold is synonymous with the words honesty, integrity, and total reliability.
Friends may call at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 North Main Street, Avoca, New York on Thursday, February 14, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. A Masonic Service will be held at 3:00 pm followed by services conducted by the Reverend Sande Thomas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
